Oral presentations of 15 minutes (including time for questions and discussion) will be scheduled in parallel sessions spread over the two days of the congress.
  2. Posters
Dedicated poster sessions will be scheduled each day, with ample time during the programme for visiting the posters.
  3. Demonstrations
The demonstrations are an opportunity to showcase your innovative research and technological advances. It is an excellent opportunity to present your work to a diverse audience and foster lively discussions. View examples below.

Abstracts can only be submitted via the NWO NAC website before the deadline of 5 December 2026 (for oral presentations and posters) and 9 January 2026 (for demonstrations). Abstracts sent via e-mail will not be accepted.

In the abstract submission system you need to provide the following information:

  • Preferred type of presentation: Oral, poster presentation or demonstration. It is not possible to give both an oral presentation and present a poster. You can, however, indicate whether you would be open to a poster presentation if we are unable to accommodate your oral presentation. It is possible to apply for a demonstration alongside either an oral presentation or a poster. Should you wish to do that, please send us an email to nac@nwo.nl.

Demonstrations:

  • Title of the demonstration: The full title will be displayed in the book of abstracts in the app.
  • Description of the demonstration: The abstract body should be no longer than 250 words. The text should be clear, concise, and written in English with correct spelling and a good sentence structure.
Mathematical symbols and equations can be included. There is no option to include images, graphs or pictures.
  • Abstract keywords: You have the possibility to add a maximum of 5 keywords to your abstract. Doing so can help the Programme Committee and conference visitors to easily identify the focus of your research.
  • Preferred day of presentation: You can select a preferred day for your demonstration. If you are available to present it on any of the two conference days, please select “Both days”.

Oral / poster presentations:

  • Title of the abstract: The full title will be displayed in the book of abstracts in the app.
  • Short title of the abstract: A short title will be displayed on the displays in the hallway of the conference venue. Please use no more than 5 words.
  • Abstract text: The abstract body should be no longer than 250 words.
  • Topics: Based on the topics chosen, your abstract will be assigned to reviewers and into a scientific parallel session. The topics aid the Programme Committee in placing your abstract into the scientific programme. The topics are based on the foundations, synergies and three routes enabling framework and conditions described in the White Paper Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) (p. 11-18). For more information on the topics, please check out the White Paper.
  • Topic 1 (mandatory): These topics are based on the EES Synergies.
  • Topic 2 (mandatory): These topics are based on the EES Foundations.
  • Topic 3 (optional): These topics are based on the EES Framework & Conditions.
  • Poster pitch: We will provide a pitch podium for poster presenters.
  • How many years you have been in your current position: In case of equal fit of a presentation for an oral parallel session, preference will be given to early career researchers.
  • Have you previously presented at NWO NAC and, if yes, what kind of presentation (oral or poster) you did and when: This information is asked so that as many different attendants as possible can get a chance to present their work.
  • We need the following information from all co-authors:
  • First name, family name, prefix, affiliation

Make sure that all co-authors agree with you submitting this abstract.

Abstracts should be carefully compiled and thoroughly checked, in particular with regard to the list of authors, before submission in order to avoid last-minute changes.

Authors are allowed as first author to submit only a single abstract. Authors can be included as co-author on multiple abstracts. The submission of an abstract carries with it the obligation that it is actually presented at the meeting by the first author. If this is not possible, please withdraw your abstract as early as possible.

There is no abstract submission or processing fee required.

Submission of the same abstract by more than one author is not allowed. Duplicates identified by the Programme Committee will be rejected.

The content of abstracts is the responsibility of their authors. The Programme Committee of NWO NAC reserves the right to reject abstracts that are not written in English, are not related to the fields of Earth and Environmental Sciences or do not meet basic standards of scientific quality.

All abstracts will be reviewed by researchers from the Earth and Environmental Sciences. Based on reviews, the topics selected during the submission of abstracts and the total number of abstracts, the Programme Committee will select abstracts for the oral sessions based on scientific quality of the abstract and which abstracts could be combined within a session, while keeping an eye on balance in career stage and diversity of the universities/institutes presenting. The Programme Committee will arrange the abstracts into broader overarching parallel sessions. The themes of these parallel sessions will focus, for example, on specific or timely issues in Earth and Environmental Sciences, or aggregate contributions with a methodological or topical similarity. The Programme Committee will decide if an abstract is accepted as an oral or poster presentation within one of those sessions. As the conference is intended to be an interdisciplinary meeting ground, this procedure aims to encourage researchers from all disciplines in Earth and Environmental Sciences to connect, interact and present their research progress.

The abstracts will be assessed on the following criteria:
1. Scientific quality: The results should be substantive and not just implied.
2. Relevance for any discipline within the Dutch Earth and Environmental Sciences

We welcome contributions from all branches of the Earth and Environmental Sciences. Abstracts can be submitted using at least two topics.

Based on the topics chosen, your abstract will be assigned to reviewers and into a scientific parallel session.

The Programme Committee will define the themes of the parallel sessions and compile the conference programme based on the abstracts received before 5 December 2025. A selection of authors will be invited to give an oral presentation from all received abstracts. By default, authors of the other abstracts will be offered the option of a poster presentation. In mid-February 2026, the final program will be announced on the website and applicants will receive an invitation with instructions for preparing their oral or poster presentations.

Oral presentations are scheduled in parallel sessions spread over the two days of the congress. Authors are allotted 15 minutes for presenting, including time for questions and discussion. Authors will be asked to upload their presentation before the start of their parallel session. We have listed some tips to help you prepare your talk.

Tips to prepare your presentation

At NWO NAC, you will have an excellent opportunity to practise your academic skills, such as giving poster presentations and poster pitches. You will be informed before the conference which day you are expected to present your poster. Posters must be displayed on the allocated day as posters are linked to the topics of parallel sessions. However, you are welcome to display your poster on both conference days. Please note that posters can only be presented in an A0 portrait (vertical) orientation of 841 x 1189 mm (width x height). When it comes to designing a scientific poster, we have compiled a few ‘best practices’.

A poster prize will be awarded to the three best posters made by early-career scientists, so if you take note of these tips, you might increase your chances of winning! More information on the poster prize can be found here [link].

We encourage you to showcase your innovative research and technological advances through engaging and practical demonstrations. It is an excellent opportunity to present your work to a diverse audience and foster lively discussions. Due to space constraints, we can accommodate a limited number of demos. Demos will be selected by the Programme Committee and NWO after the submission deadline. Proposals can be submitted by researchers at all career stages.

If your proposal for a demonstration is selected, we will provide a demo booth for you in the exhibition area, to showcase your demo on both days:

  • One white system wall,
  • One white bridging table (1200 x 600 x 1100),
  • Two white stools,
  • Lighting (pendant spotlight),
  • Electricity
  • Optional: rent a TV for €305,-.
